판타 레이 – 영원한 여행자
판타 레이Panta Rhei, ‘모든 것은 흐른다’는 뜻입니다. 고대 철학자 헤라클레이스토의 이 말은 시대를 넘어, 여전히 우리에게 유효한 단 하나의 질문을 던집니다.
“끊임없이 변화하는 이 세계에서 우리는 어떻게 존재해 나갈 것인가?”
도도새는 제게 그러한 질문을 던지게 해 준 동물입니다. 도도새는 본래 날 수 있었지만, 풍족한 환경에 안주한 끝에 비행 능력을 잃고, 결국 인간에 의해 멸종당한 새입니다. 저는 이 이야기가 우리에게 의미 있는 메시지를 전하고 있다는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 우리 인간 또한 현실의 흐름에 안주해, 세상이 제시하는 기준과 가치를 의심 없이 받아들이게 된다면 도도새가 ‘새’라는 정체성을 잃고 하늘을 나는 법을 망각했듯, 우리 역시 어느 순간 스스로에게 중요한 무언가를 잃어버리게 될지도 모릅니다.
저는 이러한 생각을 바탕으로 지난 2015년, 도도새가 최종적으로 멸종했다고 알려진 아프리카의 모리셔스 섬을 직접 방문해 그곳에서 한 달 간 머물며 도도새에 대한 리서치 트립을 수행했습니다. 그 여정은 단순히 생물학적 존재로서의 도도새를 탐구한 것이 아니라, 도도새의 비극을 인간의 역사에 대입하여 ‘우리는 어떻게 흘러가고 있는가’, 그리고 ‘우리는 지금 어떤 가능성을 잃어버리고 있는가’에 대한 질문이기도 했습니다.
비록 도도새의 존재는 오래전에 사라져 버렸지만, 이제 그들의 이야기는 제 작품 속에서 새로운 의미를 안고서 새롭게 흘러가고 있습니다. 여기서 말하는 ‘흐름’이란 단지 물리적인 이동이나 변화만을 뜻하지 않습니다. 그것은 어떤 존재가 끊임없이 자신을 갱신하고, 과거와 미래 사이를 넘나들며 스스로의 가능성을 다시 찾아가는 여정이라고 이야기하고 싶습니다.
이번 전시는 그러한 끝없는 여정에 대한 이야기입니다. 멸종했던 도도새가 제 캔버스 속에서 다시 태어나 새롭고 신비로운 여행을 시작했듯, 우리 모두가 각자의 속도와 각자의 방식으로 삶이라는 넓은 대양 위에서 자유롭게 흘러가기를 바라는 마음을 담았습니다.
도도새가 당신의 그 긴 여정에 함께 할 수 있는 유쾌한 친구가 되기를 바라는 마음을 전합니다.
Panta Rhei – The Eternal Voyager
Panta Rhei means “everything flows.” These words, attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, continue to resonate across time, posing a question that remains as relevant to us today as ever:
“How are we to exist in a world that is constantly changing?”
For me, the dodo is an animal that has led me to reflect on this very question. The dodo’s ancestors were once capable of flight, but over time, in the abundance and safety of their environment, they lost that ability. Eventually, with the arrival of humans, the species became extinct.
This story has always seemed to carry a meaningful message for us. If we, too, become complacent within the flow of reality, unquestioningly accepting the standards and values imposed upon us by the world, we may one day find that we have lost something essential to ourselves—just as the dodo lost one of the defining qualities of being a bird and forgot how to fly.
With these thoughts in mind, in 2015 I traveled to Mauritius, the island in the Indian Ocean where the dodo is known to have made its final home before extinction. I stayed there for a month, conducting a research journey dedicated to the dodo. Yet this journey was not simply an exploration of the bird as a biological species. By reflecting on the tragedy of the dodo through the lens of human history, I also sought to ask: How are we flowing through the world? And what possibilities might we be losing at this very moment?
Although the dodo disappeared long ago, its story now continues to flow through my work, taking on new meanings along the way. By “flow,” I do not mean merely physical movement or change. Rather, I see it as an ongoing journey in which a being continually renews itself, moves between past and future, and rediscovers its own possibilities.
This exhibition is a story about that endless journey. Just as the extinct dodo is reborn on my canvases and sets out once again on new and mysterious adventures, I hope that each of us, at our own pace and in our own way, can move freely across the vast ocean of life.
And I hope the dodo may become a joyful companion, traveling alongside you on your own long voyage.
