올해 초 미국 뉴욕 레지던시에 이어 또다시 떠나게 되어 일본 레지던시에서 머물게 되면서 나의 작업은 많은 변화를 겪게 되었다. 기존 작업에서는 단순히 정글 속에 숨어있는 도도새들의 이미지들을 나타냈었다면 최근 해외 레지던시에서의 작업들에서는 현지에서 구할 수 있는 인쇄물들을 이용한 콜라주 작업 또는 직접 본 풍경들을 정글과 도도새를 결합하여 표현하는 등의 시도를 하게 되었다. 이러한 배경에는 작업하는 환경이 급격하게 바뀐 데에 큰 이유가 있다. 익숙한 곳을 벗어나 타국의 낯선 장소에서 작업을 해 나간다는 것은 여러모로 큰 부담요소였기는 했지만 이전에 해보지 못했던 새로운 시도들을 해볼 수 있는 계기를 주었던 것 같다.

미국에서도 그랬던 것처럼, 도쿄라는 낯선 도시를 걸으며 가장 눈에 띄었던 것들은 일본어로 쓰여 있는 간판들과 표지판들이었다. 외국인인 나로서는 이해할 수 없는 수많은 활자들은 오히려 내게 신선한 재미를 느끼게 해 주었다. 그 외에도 일본만이 가지고 있는 고유한 건물들의 형태, 서브컬쳐, 인쇄물 등의 모든 것들이 작업을 하는데 있어 아이디어를 제공하는 원천이 되었다. 신문이나 잡지와 같은 인쇄물이 특별히 흥미롭게 느껴졌던 이유는, 그것들이 도쿄라는 도시가 가지고 있는 다채로운 모습들(그저 잠시 머물다 가는 여행자라면 쉽사리 접하지 못했을 것들-)을 가감 없이 보여주고 있었기 때문이다.

도시라는 장소는 이 시대를 살아가는 대부분의 현대인들이 삶을 영위해 나가는 곳이다. 도시에 존재하는 수많은 이정표와 간판들처럼 도시는 사람들이 가지고 있는 서로 다른 가치와 욕망이 충돌하는 장소라고 할 수 있다. 때문에 이러한 풍경은 내게 하나의 탐험 혹은 모험처럼 느껴졌다. 나는 이러한 도시의 풍경에 정글의 이미지를 결합하였는데, 어떤 위협이 도사리고 있는지 알 수 없을 정도로 빽빽한 미궁과도 같은 정글이 가진 속성이 현대 사회의 도시와 맞닿는 지점이 있다고 생각했다. 거대한 정글과도 같은 도시 속에서 벌어지는 욕망의 레이스 속에서 과연 사람들은 자신이 욕망하는 것이 진정으로 욕망했던 것이라고 확신할 수 있을까? 작품 속 이미지 여기저기에 보이는 도도새들은 이 정글과도 같은 현대 사회에서 헤매는 개개인이라고 할 수 있다. 그와 동시에 낯선 풍경 속에서 관찰자로서 존재하는 본인을 대변하는 것이기도 하다.

My work went through a lot of changes as I was living Japan Chiyoda residency again after leaving the New York residency in the US earlier this year. In the existing work, if I have shown images of the dodo birds that are simply hidden in the jungle, then in recent works in overseas residencies I tried collage work using locally available prints, or a combination of jungle I saw and dodo birds.

There is a big reason for this change in the working environment. Getting out of a familiar place and working in a strange place in another country was a big burden in many ways, but it seemed to give me an opportunity to try new things that I had not done before. As was done in the US, the most striking thing about walking in a strange city called Tokyo was signs of stores and roads written in Japanese.

A lot of letters that I can not understand as a foreigner have made me feel fresh fun. In addition, all of Japan's unique forms of buildings, subculture, prints, etc. have become a source of ideas for my work.The prints, such as newspapers and magazines, seemed especially interesting because they were showing the city's colorful features (things that would not have been easily accessible if they were just travelers who stays for a while).

The place called city is where most modern people living in this age run their lives. Like many milestones and signs in cities, cities are places where people have different values and desires.

This landscape, therefore, felt like an exploration or adventure to me. I combined the image of the jungle with the landscape of cities, and I thought there was a point where the attributes of the jungle, such as the labyrinthine jungle, so dense enough to know what the threat was, came into contact with the city of modern society. Can people be confident that their desire is really a desire in the race of desire in a city like a huge jungle?

Images in the work Dodo birds seen here and there are individuals who are wandering in modern society like this jungle. At the same time, it represents me who exists as an observer in an unfamiliar landscape.
