NFT가 예술 분야에 편입되며 최근 다양한 변화와 전에 없었던 재미있는 일들이 일어나고 있습니다. 이 기술을 통해 오랫동안 물리적인 한계를 벗어나지 못했던 이미지들은 전에는 존재하지 않았던 방향의 가능성과 확장성을 가지게 되었습니다.
이것을 예술/비예술로 가르는 일 자체는 더이상 무의미합니다. 창작자들에게 있어서 NFT란, 새로운 비물질적 재료가 나타난 것과 다름 없습니다. 마치 어떤 작가가 그동안 아크릴 물감만 써 왔다면, NFT라는, 전에 없던 새롭고 멋진 도구를 손에 쥔 셈입니다.
저 역시 2021년 초 개인적으로 NFT를 이용한 프로젝트를 진행해 왔고, 최근에는 XXBlue 플랫폼에서 두 종류의 NFT 작품을 발표했듯, 앞으로도 이 새로운 재료를 이용한 가능한 모든 실험과 작업을 시도해 볼 계획입니다. 물론, 그럼에도 불구하고 '김선우'라는 작가의 정체성을 대변하는 가장 큰 부분은 여전히 물리적인 형태의 페인팅 작업이며, 앞으로도 그럴 것입니다.
여기서 NFT는 제 작업에 대한 서브컬쳐와도 같은 개념이라고 생각합니다. 사회문화적인 측면에서 이야기하는 서브컬쳐는 해당 사회의 문화적 다양성과 가능성을 더욱 다채롭게 확장시켜주는 중요한 분야입니다. 이와 마찬가지로, 기존의 전통적인 회화에서는 시도할 수 없었던 다양한 실험을 가능하게 해 주고, 당대의 사회문화적 코드들을 보다 쉽게 작품과 결합할 수 있게 해주는 NFT 프로젝트들은 제 작업의 세계관을 확장하고 발전시키는데 있어서 가장 중요한 한 부분이 되고 있으며, 이는 제게 너무나도 흥미롭고 즐거운 도전으로 느껴집니다.

이번에 <Foundation>에서 시도하는 <A MetaDodo>프로젝트는 비물질인 NFT와 물질계에 존재하는 작품을 결합한 저의 첫번째 실험입니다. 단순한 발상이지만, 세상의 모든 일들은 아주 단순한 일부터 시작하는게 당연한 일이니까요. 본 영상에는 제가 도도새를 그리는 모습이 압축되어 기록되어 있습니다. 
햇볕이 따뜻했던 어느 주말 오후, 저는 문득 이 프로젝트를 떠올리고서 바로 작업을 시작했습니다. 영상에는 스케치를 하는 색연필 소리, 작업실 밖에서 들려오는 작은 소음들, 물감통을 집어들고, 열고, 닫는 소리, 붓을 휘저어 캔버스 위에서 조심스럽게 움직이는 소리 등 당시 도도새를 그리던 순간의 시각과 청각이 기록되어 있습니다. 이제 이 영상은 블록체인 기술이 적용된, '대체 불가능한 토큰'이 되어 비물질계에서 영원히 존재하게 됩니다. 그리고 이 과정을 지나 하나의 완결된 물질이 된 작은 캔버스는 제가 꼼꼼히 포장해 보증서와 함께 이 NFT를 구매한 소유주에게 보내드릴 것입니다. 이 비물질적 과정의 부산물인 물질적인 존재의 운명은 결국 어떻게 될까요? 만약, 최초의 NFT 소유주가 누군가에게 적절한 대가를 받고 NFT를 양도하게 된다면, 이 물질적인 존재도 도의적인 측면에서 함께 양도되어야 하는 것일까요? 아마도 그것은 전적으로 기존 소유주의 판단이 될 가능성이 큽니다. 높은 확률로 이 두 비물질과 물질은 결국 헤어져 서로 다른 경매 시장에서 각자의 새로운 운명을 찾아 여행을 하게 되겠죠. 그래서 저는 이 두 존재의 이름을 <A MetaDodo>라고 명명했습니다. 세상에 존재하지 않는 도도새는 제 손을 통해 비존재의 영역을 넘어(meta) 비물질계와 물질계 양 영역에서 새로운 생명을 얻어 존재하게 됩니다. 그래서 이 프로젝트는 허구와 실재 사이의 관련성에 대한 화두를 던지는 메타픽션(metafiction) 장르라고 이야기 할수도 있겠습니다. 사족이 길어졌다는 생각도 듭니다만, 2021년 초 Crypto Dodo 프로젝트를 시작하며 느껴왔던 NFT에 대한 다양한 생각과 상상들 속에서 파생된 하나의 재미있는 사건이자 작업으로 생각해주시면 될것 같습니다. 감사합니다.

As NFT is incorporated into the field of art, various changes and interesting things like never before are happening. Through this technology, images that have not been able to escape the physical limits for a long time have the possibility and expandability in a direction that did not exist before. 
It is meaningless to classify this as art/non-art itself. For creators, NFT is the emergence of a new immaterial tool. It is as if an artist has been using only acrylic paints for a while, and has a new and wonderful tool called NFT in his hands.
I have personally been working on projects using NFT in early 2021, and as I recently announced two types of NFT works on the XXBlue platform, I plan to try all possible experiments and work with this new material in the future. Of course, nevertheless, the artist's identity as 'Kim Seon-woo' is still a traditional painting work.
I think NFT is the same concept as a subculture of my work. Subculture is an important field that expands the cultural diversity and possibilities of the society in a more diverse way. Likewise, the NFT projects, which enable various experiments that could not be attempted in the existing traditional painting, and combine the socio-cultural codes of the time with the work more easily, are the most important in expanding and developing the worldview of my work. Being a part of it, it feels like a very exciting and enjoyable challenge for me.

The <A MetaDodo> project that I am trying on the <Foundation> platform this time is my first experiment that combines non-material NFTs with works that exist in the material world. It's a simple idea, but it's only natural that everything in the world starts with something very simple. In this video, my drawing of a dodo is compressed into 10 minutes.
One weekend afternoon on a warm sunny day, I suddenly remembered this project and immediately started working on it. In the video, the sound of colored pencils sketching, the noise from outside the studio, the sound of picking up, opening, closing, and brushing the paint box, the visual and auditory senses of the moment when drawing a dodo are recorded.
Now, this video has become an 'irreplaceable token' with blockchain technology and will exist forever in the immaterial world. And the small canvas that has passed through this process to become a single finished material will be carefully packed and sent to the owner of this NFT with a warranty card. What will ultimately be the fate of material beings that are by-products of this immaterial process? If the original NFT owner transfers the NFT to someone for a reasonable price, should this material existence be transferred along with it from a moral point of view?
Most likely it will be entirely at the discretion of the existing owners. With a high probability, these two immaterial and matter will eventually break up and travel in search of their new destiny in different auction markets. So I named these two beings <A MetaDodo>. The dodo bird, which does not exist in the world, comes into existence by gaining new life through my hands, going beyond the realm of non-existence (meta), in both the immaterial realm and the material realm. So, it can be said that this project is a genre of metafiction that raises a topic about the relationship between fiction and reality. You can think of it as an interesting event and work derived from the various thoughts and imaginations about NFT that you felt when starting the Crypto Dodo project in early 2021. thank you.
