이 편지들은 지난 2015년 7월 한 달 간 모리셔스(Mauritius)의 그랑베이(Grand Baie)에서 체류하며 수행했던 프로젝트의 결과물들이다. 이 프로젝트는 하늘을 나는 방법을 망각하는 바람에 한 마리도 남김없이 멸종 되어버린 도도새들을 ‘상징적으로’ 다시금 날아오르게 하는 작업이었다. 나는 국제 우편 봉투 위에 직접 도도새들의 다채로운 모습들을 그려 넣었고, 페이스북을 통해 내가 쓴 도도새 편지들을 전달받을 참가자들을 모집했다. 참가자들이 편지를 받으면 그 안에 들어있는 일련의 지시사항들을 수행해야 하는데, 그것들은 다음과 같다.

1. 10년 전 당신의 꿈은 무엇 인가요?

2. 당신만의 도도새를 그려주세요.

편지 안에는 이 두 지시사항을 이행하기 위한 두 장의 종이가 동봉되어 있었으며, 참가자들은 각각의 종이를 채우게 된다. 모리셔스에서의 한 달을 보내고 같은 해 8월에 다시 한국으로 귀국한 나는 참가자들을 직접 만나 그 편지들을 건네받고 그에 대한 보상으로 모리셔스에서 미리 준비해 온 작은 도도새 목각인형을 답례로 주었다.

이 프로젝트를 통해 몇 백 년 간 하늘을 날 수 없었던 도도새들은 ‘상징적으로’ 인도양을 건너는 장거리 우편 비행을 하게 된다. 나는 이를 통해 나 자신이 모리셔스까지 오게 된 본질적인 이유와 고민들을 다시 한 번 돌아보고, 도도새로부터 뻗어나가는 수많은 아이디어들을 불특정 다수의 사람들과 함께 공유하고 담론을 만들어보고자 하는데 목적이 있었다.

과거의 꿈들은 순수하며, 별처럼 반짝이기 마련이다. 현재의 자신이 그러한 것들에 대해서 지금 어떻게 생각하고 있을지는 각자 다를 수밖에 없다. 어떤 이는 환희에 가득 찰지도 모르고, 또 어떤 이는 후회와 절망의 감정을 느낄지도 모르겠다. 하지만 그러한 것들을 모두 떠나서 나는 그 꿈들이 다시 한 번 반짝일 수 있는 기회를 만들어보고 싶었다. 참가자들이 새로이 그려내는 그들만의 도도새들이 결국 다시 날아오르길 바란다. 마치 하늘을 나는 법을 망각했던 도도새들이 다시 한 번 힘차게 비행을 시작하듯이.

These letters are the results I have done while staying in Grand Baie of Mauritius in July 2015 for a month period. This project is to ‘symbolically’ make the Dodo bird to fly that has become state of extinction by losing the reason to fly. I drew Dodo birds on the front of international express mail envelope in person and recruited the participants who received my Dodo bird mails. Those people who have received my mail had to follow few instructions that I have wrote, which are he followings.

Each participant who received the mail fill two blank papers that contains in each envelope to answer these two questions. After spending a month on Mauritius, I have met the participants and collected their answer letters by myself in August that year while thanking their participation with my little wooden Dodo bird doll presents from Mauritius.

This project made Dodo Birds possible of ‘symbolically’ fly by long post travel all the way through the Indian Ocean which they were not able to make it for hundreds of years. It stimulated me to think once again about the true essential reason and questions that I wanted to solve why I have visited this far distance place to Mauritius. I more thought to share and discuss about the numerous ideas that comes from Dodo birds with variety of random people.

Past dreams are bound to be genuine and shine like the stars. The way how people think could not occur a single same way on the thoughts or opinions on their dreams. Although somebody could think as a full of joy and happiness or tragedy and sadness, I want to deliver hope and give opportunities to make once again shine their dreams. I wish the people dreams described as their own Dodo birds becomes able to fly again towards their true original dreams, as the powerful flaps of the Dodo bird’s wings to fly again towards the great sky.
